Sometimes I think that people get so carried away with wedding planners, decorations, flowers, dresses, music and everything else that they forget what the occasion is all about. My wedding was a very small affair where I wanted to put the emphasis on the fact that I was making a commitment to my husband rather than anything else. I did want to look nice for the wedding pictures but I was very happy with my cheap dress and I felt like a princess in it anyway. Despite it being cheap for a wedding dress, it was still the most expensive thing that I had worn. I had some lovely flowers and felt fantastic and looking back at my wedding photos now, although if I was doing it today I would do it differently, I am still happy at how I looked and especially how happy I looked. I do think that it is nice to have a celebration but I am not sure whether the solemn occasion of a wedding is the right place for it. I think even the guests are often thinking about the food and dancing rather than the commitment that the couple are making to each other.

When my parents got married everything was very simple. They went to their local church and had the reception in the church hall, using their family to do the catering and the wedding photos. All of the family had very similar wedding pictures which were all in black and white and a group of people standing outside the same church. They all looked very happy and that is what it should all be about. It seems a far cry from the massive ceremonies that people want to have today. I think it is because we are obsessed with celebrities and they have huge lavish affairs with wedding planners and everything and we want the same thing. It is important to remember that most of us do not have that sort of money and it would be a shame to start married life with a mountain of debt because we wanted a massive ceremony. A wedding should be about declaring your love and commitment to a person in front of your loved ones and giving them a meal to thank them for attending your special day. These days it seems like people use it as an excuse to have a party when these should really be saved for birthdays and holidays.
